Gaming Hardware Is Facing a New Challenge in 2026

Gaming hardware is entering an interesting period in 2026. Graphics cards are being asked to handle increasingly complex rendering technologies, consoles are struggling to turn extra GPU power into higher frame rates, and AI is creating a huge new market for high-performance processors.

Recent developments surrounding NVIDIA’s DLSS 5, the PS5 Pro and GTA 6, and China’s growing domestic GPU industry all point toward the same shift. The next stage of gaming hardware is not simply about having more raw performance. New workloads are changing what that performance is actually being used for.

DLSS 5 Could Push Older RTX Cards Much Harder

NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 has not officially launched, but leaked files have already been tested through unofficial mods on older GeForce graphics cards.

The early results have caught the attention of PC gamers. In one reported test using Deep Rock Galactic, enabling the leaked neural rendering technology on an RTX 3080 reportedly caused performance to drop to around 1 FPS. Similar results have also been reported on an RTX 3070 laptop GPU while testing Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

For RTX 3080 owners, the result is particularly surprising. The card is still capable of running a large number of modern games at respectable settings and frame rates. Seeing it struggle so badly with a new rendering feature highlights how different the workload can be.

DLSS 5 is expected to go beyond the image reconstruction techniques used by previous versions of DLSS. Its neural rendering approach is designed to use AI processing to improve visual elements such as lighting, materials, and character details.

That additional processing could be the reason older GPUs struggle in the leaked tests. A card may be perfectly capable of running a game while lacking the resources needed to run a new AI-based rendering feature efficiently at the same time.

The results are still preliminary. These are unofficial builds, and NVIDIA has not confirmed the final hardware requirements or performance of DLSS 5.

Even so, the tests have given RTX 30-series owners something to think about. A GPU that remains perfectly usable for gaming today may not necessarily support every new visual feature at a practical frame rate tomorrow.

PS5 Pro May Not Deliver 60FPS in GTA 6

The situation is different on the console side, but the underlying issue is similar.

The PS5 Pro has substantially more GPU power than the standard PS5, leading some players to expect that demanding games could offer higher frame rates on Sony’s upgraded console.

GTA 6 is one of the biggest examples. With reports suggesting that the game could target 30FPS on current-generation consoles, some players have wondered whether the PS5 Pro could push the game to 60FPS.

Digital Foundry’s analysis suggests that the answer may not be that simple.

GTA 6 is expected to place significant pressure on the CPU because of the amount of simulation taking place throughout its open world. Pedestrians, traffic, vehicles, physics, objects, and other systems all need to be processed while the player moves around the environment.

The PS5 Pro’s CPU is only around 7% faster than the standard PS5. Its GPU upgrade is much more substantial, but extra graphics power cannot solve a CPU bottleneck.

That means the PS5 Pro may have more value for image quality than frame rate in a game like GTA 6. Its additional GPU resources could potentially be used for better PSSR image reconstruction, improved ray tracing, and cleaner visual output rather than simply trying to double the frame rate.

For players who bought the PS5 Pro expecting GTA 6 at 60FPS, that could be a disappointing outcome. A sharper and cleaner 30FPS experience is still an improvement, but it is not the same as getting a smoother 60FPS mode.

Rockstar has not officially confirmed the final performance modes for GTA 6, so the situation could still change before release.

China’s Mu Xi GPU Industry Moves Into a New Stage

While NVIDIA and Sony are pushing existing gaming hardware forward, another part of the GPU market is developing rapidly around AI computing.

Chinese GPU manufacturer Mu Xi has reported its first profitable period. According to its first-half 2026 financial report, the company generated 13.24 billion yuan in revenue, representing a 44.67% year-over-year increase. It also reported 6.12 billion yuan in net profit attributable to shareholders, marking its first reported profit.

Mu Xi is regarded as one of China’s four major emerging GPU companies, alongside Moore Threads, Biren Technology, and Enflame Technology.

One of its key products is the XiYun C600, a GPU built on a 7nm process with 144GB of HBM3e memory. The C600 entered mass production in May 2026 and is aimed primarily at AI and high-performance computing workloads.

The large amount of HBM3e memory reflects where much of the high-end GPU market is heading. AI workloads require huge amounts of data to be moved between processors and memory, making memory capacity and bandwidth increasingly important.

Mu Xi is also reportedly working on the next-generation XiYun C700, which is positioned to compete with products such as NVIDIA’s H100.

This does not mean Chinese AI GPUs are suddenly ready to replace gaming graphics cards. Gaming requires strong drivers, broad API support, game optimization, developer tools, and a mature software ecosystem.

But Mu Xi’s progress is still significant for the wider GPU market. The company moving from years of development toward mass production and profitability shows how quickly demand for high-performance computing is expanding.

AI Is Changing More Than Just Graphics Cards

The connection between these stories becomes clearer when looking at the role AI is playing in hardware development.

NVIDIA is using neural processing to push graphics rendering further. Chinese GPU manufacturers are building processors around the growing AI computing market. At the same time, game developers are creating increasingly detailed worlds that require more CPU and GPU resources.

This is creating a different kind of hardware race.

Raw GPU performance is still important, but it is no longer the only factor. Memory bandwidth, AI acceleration, ray tracing capabilities, CPU performance, and software support can all determine whether a particular piece of hardware can take advantage of a new technology.

For gamers, this can make hardware upgrades more difficult to judge.

An RTX 3080 can still run plenty of games well, but that does not guarantee smooth performance with every new rendering technology. A PS5 Pro can provide significantly more GPU power, but that does not automatically turn a CPU-heavy game into a 60FPS experience.

Meanwhile, much of the investment happening in the GPU industry is now being driven by AI rather than gaming.

What This Means for the Next Generation of Games

The biggest change may be happening behind the scenes.

Game developers have more rendering technologies available than ever before, but those technologies also come with increasingly demanding hardware requirements. AI-based rendering, ray tracing, advanced image reconstruction, detailed environments, and complex world simulation all compete for processing resources.

That creates a difficult balance.

Developers want games to look better, but players still expect stable performance. Hardware manufacturers want to introduce new features, but gamers do not necessarily want to replace expensive equipment every few years.

The early DLSS 5 tests, the uncertainty around GTA 6 performance on PS5 Pro, and the rapid development of AI-focused GPUs such as Mu Xi’s C600 all show that the hardware landscape is changing quickly.

For gamers, the real question is no longer simply which device has the fastest GPU. It is whether the hardware they already own can keep up with the technologies that developers are preparing to use next.

That question will become increasingly important as 2026 continues and more demanding games and graphics technologies reach players.
