GPU Prices Surge, Ryzen 7 7800X3D Hits a Record Low and NVIDIA Driver Problems Return
PC gamers are facing a mixed bag of hardware news this week. Graphics card prices have surged across global markets, with some NVIDIA RTX 50-series models selling dramatically above MSRP. At the same time, AMD’s older Ryzen 7 7800X3D has fallen to a record-low price in the UK, making it an unusually attractive option for gaming PC builders. Meanwhile, NVIDIA’s latest GeForce driver is causing screen flickering and other display problems for some users, with the company already testing a fix.
Global GPU Prices Surge as RTX 50 Series Sells Far Above MSRP
The wait-for-a-price-drop strategy is becoming increasingly difficult for PC gamers. According to the latest global GPU pricing data from TechSpot, average consumer graphics card prices jumped 15% in just one month through the end of August, with almost every major product category affected.
The situation is even worse for NVIDIA’s GeForce lineup. GeForce cards saw an average monthly price increase of 19%, compared with 11% for AMD Radeon GPUs. After excluding the RTX 5090 as an extreme outlier, GPUs tracked across 10 global markets were still selling for an average of 28% above their official MSRP.
The RTX 5090 is by far the most extreme example. NVIDIA’s flagship launched with an MSRP of $1,999, but its actual US market price has reportedly reached around $5,000, or roughly RMB 34,200. That represents a staggering 145% premium over MSRP, while its average premium across the 10 markets tracked by TechSpot stands at 136%.
Other RTX 50-series cards are also far from their original pricing. The RTX 5060 Ti 16GB currently carries a global average premium of 53%, with US prices reportedly around 70% above MSRP. Interestingly, the 8GB version has a much smaller global premium of 14%.
That gap highlights one of the biggest problems facing the current GPU market: high-VRAM models are under significantly greater pricing pressure. The RTX 5070 Ti is selling for around 44% above MSRP globally, while the RTX 5080 carries an average premium of 38%.
AMD’s Radeon lineup is holding up considerably better. The RX 9060 XT 16GB has the highest premium among AMD’s tracked cards at around 28%, while the RX 9070 is only 13% above MSRP globally. The RX 9070 XT is also relatively close to its launch pricing, with an average premium of around 21%.
The main reason behind the latest price increases appears to be memory supply. Industry analysts believe GDDR7 production capacity is increasingly being directed toward AI computing hardware, leaving consumer graphics cards with a smaller share of available supply. With demand remaining strong, the resulting imbalance is being passed directly on to retail prices.
For PC gamers, this makes the traditional “wait for the next generation and buy the older card cheaper” strategy much less reliable. Instead of previous-generation GPUs becoming cheaper, the entire market is being pushed upward by supply constraints.
AMD’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D Hits a Record Low
While GPU buyers are dealing with rising prices, the CPU market is offering a very different story.
AMD’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D has dropped to just £265 in a limited-time UK promotion, equivalent to roughly RMB 2,405. That reportedly marks the lowest price ever recorded for the Zen 4 gaming processor in the local market.
More importantly, the 7800X3D is now around 34% cheaper than the newer Ryzen 7 9800X3D. As AMD’s Ryzen 9000 series becomes more widely available, the older Zen 4 platform is moving into an inventory-clearance phase. But the 7800X3D remains a strong gaming CPU thanks to its 3D V-Cache technology.
The processor’s main advantage is its large additional L3 cache. By stacking extra cache directly onto the CPU, AMD can keep more game data and instructions close to the processor cores, reducing the need to access system memory as frequently. This can improve gaming performance while also helping maintain more consistent frame times in demanding scenes.
The current pricing creates another unusual situation. The 7800X3D has reportedly fallen below the price of the Ryzen 7 7700X3D, despite the latter essentially being a lower-clocked model using the same Zen 4 architecture and 3D V-Cache design.
That means buyers can currently spend less on the 7800X3D while getting the higher-clocked version of the same basic configuration. Such price inversions are unusual in the CPU market and make the older processor particularly interesting for gamers building on a budget.
There is one important limitation: the £265 price is tied to a limited-time promotion in the UK. It should therefore not be treated as a permanent global price cut.
Still, the deal highlights how different the CPU and GPU markets currently look. While high-end graphics cards are becoming increasingly expensive, an older gaming-focused processor can sometimes become a much better value simply because it has entered the final stage of its product cycle.
NVIDIA’s New Driver Is Causing Screen Flickering
NVIDIA is also dealing with another problem on the software side.
The company released the GeForce Game Ready 616.56 driver on August 26, but some users quickly began reporting screen flickering, brief black or white flashes, sudden brightness changes and distorted colors after installing the update.
The problem does not appear to be limited to NVIDIA’s newest hardware. Reports have come from users with GeForce GTX 16, RTX 30, RTX 40 and RTX 50 series graphics cards.
The issue seems particularly common when using applications based on the Chromium browser engine. Affected users have reported flickering while browsing with Chrome, scrolling through webpages or watching videos. Several users have also found that reverting to the previous 610.88 driver makes the problem disappear.
Testing by technology blogger Renan Maniero suggests that the problem may also be connected to display color-depth settings. Flickering reportedly occurs more frequently when output is set to 8-bit color, while switching the same monitor to 10-bit can eliminate the problem. Windows Automatic Color Management has also been reported as a workaround.
However, 10-bit output is not a universal solution. Some monitors may not have enough interface bandwidth to maintain the same resolution and refresh rate at a higher color depth, meaning users may have to lower their refresh rate.
Not every system running 616.56 is affected, so the problem does not appear to be universal. For affected users, reverting to 610.88 remains the simplest temporary solution, while switching to 10-bit output may also work depending on the monitor and connection.
NVIDIA has acknowledged the reports. NVIDIA employee Manuel Guzman said in the official GeForce 616.56 feedback thread that the company is testing a fix, although a specific release date for the corrected driver has not yet been announced.
For users who have not installed 616.56 yet, waiting for the next driver may be the safer choice if their current setup is working normally. For those already experiencing flickering, rolling back to 610.88 is currently the most straightforward workaround.
PC Gaming Hardware Is Moving in Different Directions
These three stories show just how unpredictable the PC hardware market has become.
Graphics cards are getting more expensive as AI workloads put additional pressure on memory supply. At the same time, older CPUs such as the Ryzen 7 7800X3D can become significantly cheaper as manufacturers clear out previous-generation inventory. On the software side, even a routine GPU driver update can introduce problems that affect everyday tasks such as browsing and watching videos.
For PC gamers planning an upgrade, that makes the current market more complicated than simply choosing the newest hardware.
A high-end GPU may now require a much larger budget than expected, while an older gaming CPU could offer considerably better value. And before installing the latest driver, checking whether other users are reporting problems may be just as important as looking at the new features included in the update.
The hardware market is not moving in one direction. For players willing to compare prices, consider older components and avoid unnecessary software updates, there are still good deals available. But the latest GPU prices and driver problems show that buying and maintaining a gaming PC is becoming increasingly dependent on timing.
